Be Of Good Cheer

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”    John 16:33   NKJV

Everything in this life is a choice that we have to make.  Jesus says in this verse to be of “good cheer” even when we are in the throes of difficult times.  Wait, how can I be of good cheer when I am in those times of trouble?  How can I be of good cheer when the news is bad and I am in tribulation?  How can I possibly be of good cheer?  That is not realistic!  Well, Jesus would not have told us to be of good cheer, even in times of trouble, if it was not possible to be of good cheer through His strength.

This then is our choice in that season of struggle. Will I let circumstances rob me of peace and joy, or will I simply choose to trust His promises and be of good cheer?  Hopefully, our answer is that we choose to be of good cheer, but that leads to the obvious question of how do we make that choice when our emotions tell us to be grieved instead of cheerful?

Jesus begins this verse by assuring us that all He has told us (everything in the Word of God) He told us so that we would have peace.  If we lack peace in our lives with the resulting lack of cheer, then we should read the Bible (His Word) for from here we will be filled with His peace.  Often we can’t hear His Words of peace in our ears because the trial we are in is so loud in our souls.  Quiet the trial by reading the Word!

These things that Jesus spoke to us, the Word of God, are so that we may have peace.  The Word of God was from before time itself.  In the very first verse of the first chapter of this gospel of John we read this truth: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

From the beginning was the Word and the Word was spoken that you would have peace knowing the fullness of His promises for you.  Jesus established peace before the very creation of this world because peace is in His Word.  Before you were even aware of your trial, you had peace as your foundation.  In this world, there will be tribulation but don’t worry He already overcame it for you.

Jesus says to choose to be of good cheer.  You can make this choice if you believe Him. Overcome means that He has deprived it of its power to harm you.   If you are in a trial don’t worry, be of good cheer and keep going forward in peace because He has already overcome it.  He conquered it so choose to be of good cheer in your trial today.
