Wiser Still

9 “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.  10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”   Proverbs 9:9-10   NKJV

Here is a truth we don’t always recognize; as you give instruction to a child of God (one who is wise in that they are seeking the things of the Lord), they will get even wiser.  You can give instruction to someone who is not seeking the Lord and the instruction becomes just words that fall to the ground with no value to the hearer.  Haven’t we all had that happen?  They may be words of life and truth, but the one who hears them does not become wiser by them.  Only those who are already wise in Jesus will gain more wisdom with teaching.

That should be each one of us, always hungry to know Him more, even greedy for more of the wisdom of the Word.  This is when we are truly wise because we know there is always more to know and we are never satisfied.

Verse 10 indicates that this wisdom finds its beginnings in the fear of the Lord.  The word fear in this verse means a reverent and worshipful approach to God. One understanding of this verse is that they are nothing without Jesus and His sacrificial love. They are the one that has already become wise and is ready to grow in even deeper wisdom through the Word.

Without this awareness, a person is not wise and cannot learn or become wise.  This heart of reverence and worship is the sign of one who is already wise and open to receive even greater wisdom.  We need to become that person, the one will seek after instruction and not just hope it finds its way to them.  Be the person that wants to spend time in the Bible because you expect the Holy Spirit to enlighten you with new understanding every day.  Be the person that devours the Word and is then able to have a Word in season for others when they are lacking in spiritual insight and wisdom.

It is not the people with the highest IQ’s that get the wisdom from on high, the wisdom that is beyond the natural, the supernatural understanding and insight.  It is the one who loves the Word and is diligently reverent and worshipful in their daily approach to Jesus. They are the ones that will continue to grow in wisdom beyond the wisdom of the world.   Be wise enough to hunger for more wisdom.
