When It’s Hard To Be Content

Sep 1, 2020Written Devotionals

“…be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”    Hebrews 13:5-6    NKJV

Many times we desire change in our life.  We want to move forward but we feel stuck.  The first phrase in the verse above, learning to be content where we are is a hard one to get past.   Contentedness can only come when we are truly focused on Him and not the world around us.  With natural vision, we can only see the natural world and that is deceptive and contrary to the reality of the spirit realm.  Since that is what we see, that is what we respond to treating it as though it was the final reality.  In fact, it may not be a reality at all.  It may only appear that way through our perceptions.

Perhaps you are looking for a change, even anxious for it, but we must learn to be content.  Content in the knowledge that even though we may not be able to see what Jesus is orchestrating behind the scenes, we know He has a plan for you, a plan that brings Him even greater glory.  We must learn contentedness in every season because even though it may appear that nothing is happening (nothing that we can see), Jesus has never left our side. He has never stopped putting in place the good plans He has for us.  Now look at the end of verse 5 and verse 6 from the Amplified Bible:

“be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]”

How determined is Jesus for you to know that despite appearances, He has not forgotten you, nor the plans that He has for you?  The message of His faithfulness is that He will not fail you in any way.  He will not leave you with no support.  He is so firm in this and it is so important that you understand this that He said three times!  “I will not, I will not, I will not” forget you or leave you without His aid and support for victory.

His hold upon you is firm and constant.  Once more there is a point of emphasis here in the text.  He will never even begin to relax His hold of care upon you.  That is unthinkable to the mind of God “Assuredly not!”  The season may be uncertain from our vantage point, but it is never outside of His plan and His hand.   Just know this is true, He has great and wonderfully amazing plans for you, so be content where you are, but with a healthy dose of anticipation of what is ahead.
