What You Know From The Beginning

“As for you, keep in your hearts what you have heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the first dwells and remains in you, then you will dwell in the Son and in the Father [always].”     1 John 2:24   Amplified Bible

John tells us to keep in our hearts what we know from the beginning.  This beginning refers to the gospel of Jesus.  What we know from the beginning, from when we heard and received the gospel, that the good news of Jesus Christ was the truth of who He is and what He did for us, and who we are in Him.  It is the awareness of the resurrection power of Jesus that is in us.  You may say “Well, I always know that.”  That is may be true, however, that is different than “keeping it in our hearts” as the Amplified Bible says.

Keeping it in our hearts means that we keep it in the front of our thoughts and thinking throughout the day.  It means we don’t ignore it.  Unfortunately many in the Body of Christ often put the Word of Jesus in front of their thinking only on the Sundays that they attend church service and hear the Word preached and taught.  It is also easy to get so caught up in the things of this world during our daily lives that we ignore the Word by relegating it to the back of our minds.  The tendency is to view events of the day and events of the world through the natural mind instead of through the Word which is kept front and center in our hearts.

The Word of God is supposed to be the filter through which we view all things in life and everything throughout our day.  Be honest, how many times today did you stop and filter information that was fed to you by the Word?  How many times did you consider the Word that you know?

For example, if you received a bad report to start your day today, did it cause you to walk in fear and doubt all day long?  Or, did you filter it through the knowledge that is ever present in your heart of who Jesus is, what He has done for you, and the promises that He has given you in His Word?

This is what it means to keep in our hearts or in our minds what we have known from the beginning.  At the beginning of your walk with Jesus you had the good news that someone shared with you from the Bible, the Word.  That Word gave you eternal life in His resurrection power.  John is reminding us to keep that which we knew from the start in our hearts daily, Jesus the Word.
