Walk Out From Under The Burden

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”     John 1:29   NKJV

See what John the Baptist says as He sees Jesus, just before the baptism of Jesus.  Think about what John is saying in the verse above.  Upon seeing Jesus and because John has had the Holy Spirit since the time he was in Elisabeth’s womb, he recognizes that this is the Savior, this is the God come to earth and dwelling in the flesh.  Understanding this John says that this Jesus, this lamb, this future sacrifice will be taking away the sins of the world.

All believers acknowledge the work that Jesus did on the cross.  All say that Jesus was the sacrifice, the shed blood for the removal of our sins, and yet, most people will still walk around this very day, weighed down by the burdens of life.  A lot of the burden that we carry is because of our awareness of our own faults, weaknesses, and failures.  We realize we are not worthy of the gift we have received and struggle to receive it.

For many of us, there is a disconnect with receiving because there is a disconnect with our worthiness to accept the things promised to us, through Jesus.  This becomes a hindrance that we all battle to one degree or another, especially in our moments of weakness.

John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.  Notice that it does not say Jesus took away the “sins” of the world, plural, but rather the “sin” of the world.  Sin itself has been defeated and destroyed.  It has no hold upon us who have received Him because He took it away.  There is no sin or failure that disqualifies us from receiving and yet we walk around weighted down by guilt, struggling to get out from underneath what we feel we deserve.  How often do we fail to see that we are walking under that burden and hindering ourselves, hindering the freedom and liberty of Jesus that is truly ours?

It is one of those things that we don’t really think about and as a result, fail to see in our own lives.  “Jesus, help us to see where we are carrying the weight of sins, something we need not burden ourselves with because you have taken away the sin of the world!  Help us to walk in your total freedom and liberty!”
