Thinking On His Supremacy
“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” Colossians 1:18 Amplified Bible
In the body of Christ, we seem to accept the truth of this verse readily, but we do not appreciate the depth of what that verse is telling us. Jesus is supreme. He is the all in all. Everything points to Him. He is our Lord and Savior and we are to praise and honor Him always. He should be our first thought and not just an additional piece of information. Jesus is pre-eminent above everything else.
What do I mean by that? We are very good at looking at what Jesus has done for us. We are good at focusing on how to receive every blessing and promise that is ours in Jesus. We teach these principles and they are very true. They are vital for us to walk in overcoming victory in all things in this life. While it is imperative for us to understand that in the Church today, there is more beyond that truth that does not get talked about. We cannot just stop at that level of His truth and reality. Jesus has done everything for us and we can possess all that He has given us.
But now we have to understand the other part of who Jesus is. He is the Lord and He is supreme over all other things. He is the head of the body and worthy of our praise but also worthy of our honor as we express His supremacy in all things. In everything Jesus is supreme.
We teach about all that we have in Jesus but do we also spend time teaching that Jesus is above all? Who He is is more important than what Jesus can do for us. He is the one and only one that deserves our daily awe and the accompanying praise and worship that is a result of that awe. Do we focus enough on just honoring Him, thinking about Him and the glory of who He is? The sad truth is that we do not. We learn of the benefits that result in the relationship that we have with Jesus, but we don’t focus on His glory or just revere Him. We don’t think about just Him in all the glory that He is. Glory not just because of what He did for us (thank you Jesus!), but the glory that is the observation of the resplendent nature of His character.
Jesus deserves to have us worshipfully think on Him with gratitude and praise-filled hearts. Beyond the fact that He deserves this attentive consideration, we benefit from those times of honoring Him. We always need to be looking towards His glory with reverence, as He is supreme over everything else in life.
