The Word Of God Is Supreme
“So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts”. 1 Peter 1:19 NASV
Too often as believers, we act as though we trust in circumstances more than we trust in the power of the Word. This is a big mistake! The promises of the Word should be taken literally, yet we choose to act like King Jehoiakim from Jeremiah, who took a knife and cut out the parts of the Word that he did not like. Subtract from the Word and you subtract from your life.
The Bible is the inspired truth from God to you. It is not just one book from one man’s hand. It is 66 books written by more than 40 authors over a period of 1,600 years! And yet those writings have both harmony and consistency from Genesis to Revelation. This can only come from divine inspiration.
Nothing in life takes supremacy over the Word! Neither sickness, not poverty nor any other circumstances that may falsely cry out their supremacy. Consider the words of Peter in 2 Peter 1:16-21. He was one of three (James and John the other two) on the Mount of transfiguration. They saw Jesus’ face shine like the sun, His clothes become white as light. They saw Moses and Elijah appear and talk with Jesus. Next, they heard the voice of God Himself saying “this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.
Peter had witnessed these events, which in and of itself would be life changing, yet he says in verse 19 that we have a more sure, a more certain word than those things he saw and heard that day, a more sure Word in the scriptures themselves. That is an impressive example of the authority of the Word.
You can also find an example in the book of 1 Samuel. The Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant viewing it as a great trophy. They take it to the house of their god, Dagon, and set it by the statue. Remember what the Ark had in it. According to Deuteronomy 10:2-5 the tablets with the Ten Commandments were kept inside. Deuteronomy 31 says that it also housed the five books of Moses. So the Ark represented, among other things, the Word of God.
They came back the next morning to find that the statue of their God had fallen face down before the Ark. It had bowed down to the Word of God. They set it back up again and the next day the statue was back face down before the Ark (the Word) only this time the head and both hands had broken off. Graphically this demonstrates that nothing stands before the Word. All foes are defeated and powerless before the Word of God! So are all the circumstances in your life that are contrary to the Word. If you will but stand on the Word and speak the Word, those circumstances that are overwhelming you will be defeated and made powerless against you. That situation will bow down before the Word and submit to the authority and supremacy of the Word. Let’s act as though we believe in the Word’s supremacy and stand on it today in our lives!
