The Power Of “I Am”

Feb 19, 2017Written Devotionals

3 “Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”  They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”  Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.”   John 18:3-6   NKJV

On the night of His betrayal we see Judas leading the troops to arrest Jesus.  They did not expect the powerful result of Jesus identifying Himself to them.  When it was established they were looking for Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus simply stated two words, but what powerful words they were.  He said “I am He”.

Look at the power that was exemplified and released when Jesus revealed Himself as God.  That is what He did when He said “I am He”.  At those words revealing Himself as God the men were all thrown backwards and fell to the ground simply at the power of those words.  The Amplified Bible says that they “lurched” backwards and fell to the ground.  Can you picture all these troops coming with weapons, strength and their worldly authority, to take Jesus?  They thought they had power and authority but it must have come as quite a shock when they experienced the power of the name of Jesus.  The power of that name left them defenseless and already submissive.

Why did this happen at the mere speaking of the words “I am He”?  Because this was truly a revelation of Himself as God, this is a great “I Am” statement of identification just as we see from Exodus 13 when God identified Himself to Moses.

13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”  14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”   Exodus 3:13-15   NKJV

This was the identification of who God is and of His power.  This was Jesus making that same statement to those gathered in the power and authority of man to arrest Him.  This is the power that is in the name of Jesus, the same power that is available to you and me as His followers.  We have the power of that name as well, but we need to know that and believe it.  With the revelation of Jesus in your life, comes the revealing of His power.

As you start a new year today remember, you have The Power, believe it, stand on it and use it! Jesus has given you all you need.
