No Carry Overs From Yesterday

Jun 23, 2019Written Devotionals

22 It is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not.  23 They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.   Lamentations 3:22-23    Amplified Bible

In the third chapter of Lamentations the author has just finished a diatribe of the sufferings he has endured.  Then in this chapter he begins to encourage himself and his soul by remembering the good things and the promises of God.  In these two verses he speaks of God’s mercy, loving-kindness, tenderness and compassion.

He reminds the reader that every morning all these promises are brand new for us that day.  However, here is what happens.  Most of the time we go to sleep with our mind replaying the events of the day and our final thoughts are on the troubles and problems and what they may represent tomorrow.  We go to sleep thinking about the stresses of the day and thus we carry them with us into the next day.  Instead, what we should do is let go of the problems and thoughts of the day as we lay our heads on the pillow and let our last thoughts be about Jesus and His Word.

Then, when we awake in the morning, we should allow our first thoughts to be on Him and the Word, not on the possible problems confronting us that day.  In so doing, we leave yesterday’s problems behind us. We leave them in yesterday and we start today with the new mercies and blessings, the promises and the victories that Jesus has specifically for us today.

Too often we carry yesterday’s problems with us to the next day and in so doing, we miss the new good things that Jesus had for us for that day.  We made a choice to carry the burdens and disappointments for the previous day into the new day.  That circumvents the good plans the Lord has for us.  Verse 23 tells us that the new blessings He has for us daily are great and abundant.  We often don’t feel like that is what we get as we move through our day, but that is because we had already made a choice to carry yesterday’s problems over into today.

Verse 23 goes on to say that with those great plans the Lord has for our day, comes stability from His faithfulness.  Think of it this way.  If I go to sleep worried and unsettled, I will likely wake the same way.  The trouble and burdens from yesterday are what I get because it was my choice.  If He is my last thought as I go to sleep and my first thought of the day when I awake, then I am embracing His victorious plans for my day.  If that is the choice I make then I will find that my path is stable all day long.

Don’t carry over yesterday’s troubles into today by thinking about them as you sleep.  Go to sleep with your thoughts on Jesus, His loving kindness, mercy and tender compassion for you.  Then you leave yesterday’s troubles behind you.
