Mentoring Your Timothy’s
19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. 20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. Philippians 2:19-22 NKJV
In this chapter, Paul is telling the Philippians that he is sending Timothy to them. Timothy is a man that Paul has trained and mentored to help him become a man of God and representative of Jesus. It is clear that Paul has ultimate trust in this young man and the qualities of Jesus that had developed in Timothy are not known only by Paul. It is evident that the Philippians had already seen the character of Timothy demonstrated to them previously.
Paul views Timothy as a spiritual son and as we read Paul’s epistles we realize what a precious relationship this was and we see the fruit of Paul’s investments into this young man. Paul has prepared Timothy in the things of Jesus, and in being a man in Christ. This is a rare thing, a powerful thing and something that is needed much more in our culture. We need to raise up spiritual children of our own in this life. I don’t mean your own flesh and blood children, but people that the Lord brings across your path who are hungry for the experience and knowledge that you have gained in your service to Jesus. When we invest ourselves in someone else, sharing our wisdom from our failures as well as our successes, we are allowing the character of Jesus to be imparted into another. They gain from our walk with Jesus.
Paul found one that he could trust to pour himself into for no gain to himself but simply for the betterment of the other and the glory of Jesus. How about you? Jesus has many potential spiritual “sons” and “daughters” seeking to grow in Jesus. They need spiritual parents who will mentor them, allowing them to become all that Jesus has for them. In turn, every life they touch is fruit from your investment.
You don’t have to be someone with 30 years of life experience in your spiritual walk. If you have been a believer for 6 months you know a lot more than the one who just received Jesus. Pour what you know into them, mentor them as you grow. The point is that each of us experiences and has knowledge of Jesus that will help grow others. Find them, mentor them, become their spiritual parent. You will also find that you will learn more of the Word as you teach what you know to others. If you want to know more yourself then teach others and you will understand it more clearly yourself.
Find your Timothy’s and give them all that you have through Jesus, it will change their life, your life and lives of others around you as well.
