DAVID’S BOLD FAITH WORDS
“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; 2 May He send you help from the sanctuary, And strengthen you out of Zion; 3 May He remember all your offerings, And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah 4 May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose. 5 We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.” Psalm 20:1-5 NKJV
We see the great faith of David expressed boldly in these words . These are wonderful statements of his trust, reliance and confidence in the Lord. We should remember that we have a better covenant with the Lord than David had because we have a covenant with the Lord through Jesus. We have a better covenant, with better promises and yet rarely do such words of faith emanate from our mouths with such boldness as this. We can learn from the language of David how to speak bold faith words.
In verse one David boldly asserts that the Lord will answer us in time of trouble. David can say this with passion and certainty because this has been the experience in his life. David faced many days of trouble, but he had come to realize with certainty that in that moment of need God would speak and answer his needs with total victory that could only come through the Lord. This should become our experience in this life as well.
He also knew that the name of the Lord would defend him when the world brought accusation or words that were contrary to the promises of his covenant with God. The Lord would defend him. How much more true is that for you and me today with our superior covenant in Jesus?
In verse two David expected help to come from the Sanctuary and from Zion. This should become our common experience as well because once again this is truer for you than it was for David. Jesus is actually dwelling in the temple of your body as a believer in Him.
In the third verse David refers to God’s faithfulness to remember your offerings and accept them. The offerings mentioned by David have been brought to fullness in Jesus Christ and the offering of His own body as a sacrifice for our sins. The Father remembers that offering and thus sees you as the righteousness of Jesus and He sees you as His own child. You are acceptable to Him because of who you are in Jesus.
In verses four and five we know that Jesus fulfills the plan He has for your life and as we are bold like David we see the purposes for our lives revealed with power as we simultaneously see our heart’s desire become more and more for Him. Finally, we can rejoice even more so that He has answered all of our prayers already. David knew all this and spoke it boldly, we greater certainty we should speak our own bold words of faith!
